24/7 VCPR

24/7 Emergency Afterhours care for existing clients with a Valid Client Patient Relationship (VCPR)

Please note that our after-hour services are only extended to existing clients with a valid patient-client relationship and are in good standing. Meaning that we see each patient at a minimum once yearly during regular business hours and have no outstanding balance. Payment is required at the time of service.

Please call the clinic at 226-931-5362, Dial Extention 1 to be directed to the after-hours line and leave a voicemail for the on-call veterinarian for further assistance should you need our emergency services.

Please note there is an after-hours consult fee for any medical advice given over the phone that does not require an after-hours visit from $55.00 to 85.00 + hst.

In order to better understand what should constitute a middle of the night call, we’ve created a chart with examples for each species of urgent (should be seen within ~24 hours) versus emergent (needs to be seen immediately or within a very short time period).
Only emergent cases should prompt a late night/early morning call.

Dogs
Urgent case examples: Not eating, vomiting, lethargy, fever, smaller wounds
Emergent case examples: Broken limb, non-productive vomiting/gagging in a large breed dog, toxin ingestion (chocolate, grapes, rat poison, anti-freeze etc), a wound with uncontrolled bleeding, seizures lasting longer than 5 minutes, sudden onset paralysis

Cats
Urgent case examples: Not eating, vomiting, lethargy, fever, smaller wounds, struggling to poop
Emergent case examples: Male cat unable to urinate, broken limb, toxin ingestion (grapes, lilies etc), wounds with uncontrolled bleeding, respiratory distress, sudden onset paralysis

Horses & Equines
Urgent case examples: Off feed, fever, leg that is suddenly swollen but without trauma, lethargy, smaller wounds
Emergent case examples: Broken limb, colic signs (call vet to help triage the seriousness), wounds with large amounts of bleeding or that are overtop/near joints, choke, any birthing complication, down and unable to rise

Ruminants (Cattle, goats, sheep)
Urgent case examples: Off feed, fever, lethargy, small wounds
Emergent case examples: Uterine prolapse, birthing difficulties, “down cow”, bloat, sudden onset paralysis

Online Pharmacy

Online Pharmacy Policy

Talbot Road Veterinary Services does not recommend using online pharmacies for pet products, as there are concerns about their legitimacy and safety.

With online pet pharmacies, there is a higher risk for issues to arise as the products are priced lower than what it costs us to purchase them through our accredited suppliers.  Therefore, the companies that sell those products will not back or guarantee the medication sold through these pop-up online pharmacies, simply because they do not sell their products to them directly.

There are 5 specific suppliers that are able to ship these medications directly to veterinary practices that hold a valid Doctor of Veterinary Medicine license, these 5 suppliers do not have any ties or affiliation to online pharmacies.

We can empathize that the cost of pet care is at an all-time high, What we can say though is that all of the products we dispense here come from verified sources and companies that specifically do quality/efficacy testing for animal use, rather than using a human medication as a pet medication, despite our differences in metabolism and biochemical processes that can alter how medication works in the body.

Health Canada has a warning about online pharmacies on the goverments website and is available by clicking on the link provided below.

https://www.canada.ca/en/health-canada/services/buying-drugs-over-internet.html

That being said, we can not deny you a script if you would still like to purchase through them.  The cost for us to script out to an online pharmacy is as follows;

Prescription Writing Fee $18.40
Consultation with Other Professional $32.10
Total cost - $50.50 + hst ($57.07)

These fees are to cover our veterinarians' and staff's time for making, documenting, verifying the script, and consulting with the pharmacy.

Talbot Road Veterinary Services will require you to sign a waiver stating that you're aware of the potential risks before completing the prescription request. The waiver absolves Talbot Road Veterinary Services & E. Zakrajsek Veterinary Medicine Professional Corporation, its employees, owners, and any of its corporations of any liability.
Second Opinions

Second Opinions

Please note that for second opinions, we only allow referrals to specialty clinics.

If you wish to proceed with a second opinion from another general practice, please note that your files will be transferred to that clinic, and accessibility to our after-hours services will be terminated.

This is to maintain continuity of care and ensure there’s no bouncing between clinics, resulting in lost patient history.  Instead, by referring to a specialist, we can gain the most from a second opinion (similar to going from your family doctor to a specialty doctor rather than family doctor to family doctor) and have the records returned to us in full so that the patient's file is complete.
